The Galeria Municipal do Porto has a regular programme of exhibitions and events dedicated to the contemporary visual arts, also developing specific projects in design and architecture. With the mission of presenting exhibitions that reflect on recent trends in contemporary artistic and discursive production, we promote research, exchange and dissemination of ideas stimulating a debate surrounding the arts.
Since relaunching its institutional mission in 2014, the Galeria Municipal do Porto has worked with a wide range of national and international partners in the programming and commissioning of exhibitions, performances and discussions, also stimulating long-term engagement through its learning programmes and publications.
The Galeria Municipal do Porto has free admission on all of its activities.

The Galeria Municipal do Porto offers guided tours of the exhibitions for the school community, of all ages and different educational groups, as well as courses, workshops and the opportunity to take part in initiatives associated to the Public Programmes.

A ping is an irregular or paced sound that anticipates a repetition or an answer and makes the listener wait and pay attention. If there is no response should we repeat it in the expectation of getting an answer? In computer language, a ping measures speed, in function of the time between sending and receiving information on a network. Between two bodies, a ping responds to a pong, so that the game will continue.
PING ! is based on the idea of a dynamic back‑and‑forth discussion and is aimed at young adults attending secondary schools or higher education. We hope that their voices will have an impact on the Galeria Municipal do Porto. This educational project’s main objectives are to encourage thinking, stimulate artistic languages, educate people for strangeness, and establish links with various geographical and symbolic contexts.

Delineated on the basis of each exhibition, with a set of 3 to 4 continuity sessions that will take place in three different venues:
In the GMP, with:
→ Open classes given by
curators, artists and experts
→ Guided tours by educators
In the Classroom, experimenting with artistic practices which are rarely included in the curriculum, with:
→ Workshops
→ Projection of films and shared readings
And Outdoors, with:
→ Wanderings
→ Sound or illustrated routes

In close dialogue with teachers who encourage students to participate in a cultural and artistic context, the educational project includes the PING! Ambassadors group, which is formed by young adults who will jointly build a meeting and reflection platform dedicated to exploring contemporaneity.
Every month there will be group‑dynamic activities, sharing of experiences and reflections, approaching them to the GMP’s curatorial and production teams. By taking on the role of PING ! Ambassadors the students are asked to share the project with their classes through actions that can involve giving guided tours, moderating conversations, revisiting artistic techniques, or other activities that each student wants to propose and implement.

Guided tours or other activities for schools and groups require prior booking, and will take place on Wednesdays, between 10 am and 1 pm; and on Thursdays and Saturdays, between 2 pm and 6 pm. Contact us by e-mail or by phone +351 226 081 063.

Participation in PING ! is free. Target Audience: young adults aged between 16 and 22, attending secondary school and the first three years of higher or university education.

In continuation of its partnership with the EDP Foundation, the Galeria Municipal do Porto presents De Outros Espaços, a new exhibition from the series Perspectives, through which the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) has been proposing new thematic interpretations of the EDP Foundation’s Art Collection.
The exhibition is named after an influential essay by Michel Foucault and examines notions of space as imagined and developed by visual artists, in contrast to the understanding of space in scientific or technical disciplines, including appropriation of this concept by the field of architecture beginning with the modernist movement in the early twentieth century. Urgent topics emerge from this approach towards the idea of space, including identity and gender issues, social alienation in contemporary urban contexts, and revisiting complex historical memories through installations, paintings and sculptures by several artists.
