Expo’98 no Porto is a competition which attributes two grants for the development and production of two exhibitions in the Galeria Municipal do Porto in 2019 and 2020.

As a municipal institution, the Galeria Municipal's mission is to present exhibitions that promote a reflection about contemporary artistic and discursive trends. Expo’98 no Porto aims to include within this overall reflection on the role of the Galeria Municipal a project which will strengthen the relationship between the singularity of its programming identity and the city’s artistic and curatorial practices.

Directed at curators and artists residing in Porto during the entire period of design and implementation of the exhibitions, Expo’98 no Porto has a total budget of 98.000 euros. The two exhibitions chosen within the competition will be presented at the Galeria Municipal: the first exhibition, with a 34,000 euros budget , will open in December 2019, and the second exhibition, with a 64.000 euros budget , will open in 2020.

Applications must be sent to galeriamunicipal@cm-porto.pt from March 1, 2019.

AFTER THE BANG

  • MR
This exhibition results from the competition project, “Expo'98 no Porto”, and was selected by an independent jury of the artistic team of the Galeria Municipal do Porto.

At the turn of the third millennium, the social and economic developments that began in the late twentieth century triggered a series of conditions that have played a central role in questioning the positivity heralded by globalisation. After the Bang proposes a reflection about the paradoxes of their consequences, while challenging concepts of manipulation of time. The works presented were produced in the late 2010s by thirteen artists who spent their childhood in Portugal in the 1990s.
Using photography and expanded cinema, while exploring the relationship between documentary, reality and fiction, the works focus on issues of humanity, physical space and time. In a generation characterised by the growth of digital culture, in which artists and other cultural agents use new technologies to produce and circulate their works, it is necessary to think about the ontological nature of the image. The particularities that emerge from this generational influence are directly transposed into works of art, which assume great importance when thinking about the past.
