Expo’98 no Porto is a competition which attributes two grants for the development and production of two exhibitions in the Galeria Municipal do Porto in 2019 and 2020.

As a municipal institution, the Galeria Municipal's mission is to present exhibitions that promote a reflection about contemporary artistic and discursive trends. Expo’98 no Porto aims to include within this overall reflection on the role of the Galeria Municipal a project which will strengthen the relationship between the singularity of its programming identity and the city’s artistic and curatorial practices.

Directed at curators and artists residing in Porto during the entire period of design and implementation of the exhibitions, Expo’98 no Porto has a total budget of 98.000 euros. The two exhibitions chosen within the competition will be presented at the Galeria Municipal: the first exhibition, with a 34,000 euros budget , will open in December 2019, and the second exhibition, with a 64.000 euros budget , will open in 2020.

Applications must be sent to from March 1, 2019.

Quatro Elementos (Four Elements) is structured around the cosmogonic idea of the Natural Elements – that has inspired thinkers over the ages and continues to influence contemporary artistic practice in its various different areas, in particular in the visual arts.
Four curators have been invited to develop an exhibition project and each was assigned an Element.

Ana Luísa Amaral - Water, Eduarda Neves - Earth, Nuno Faria - Air, Pedro Faro - Fire

This is a quasi-animistic exhibition about the more or less material representation of the Water, Earth, Fire and Air in the work of artists, writers and other thinkers. This exhibition proposes to visit the Elements, using multiple languages, in an isolated or contaminated manner, questioning their complex manifestations in the absence or presence of human action.
