Interdimensional is the result of an intensive investigation into the transcendental phenomenon of the Northern Lights and their voices. The performance combines self-recorded field recordings of natural very low frequency (VLF) radio phenomena captured in Norway with a custom-built crystal radio, light, sensors, and motors to create a technological audiovisual interpretation of the aurora borealis within the performance space.
The detection system generates sounds in response to electromagnetic fields and to variations in the intensity and quality of the light produced. At the same time, specially designed motors create a continuous flow of electromagnetic forces that is detected by the sensors, revealing both visible and invisible processes through a restrained audiovisual language.
The title Interdimensional refers to the movement of energy between different modes of perception across dimensions of space and time. Part of this energy derives from the artist’s recordings of “natural cosmic voices” — VLF radio emissions associated with the Northern Lights — whose sonic characteristics are continually transformed. The other part is generated live through the electromagnetic forces produced during the performance, forming a more contained “sister process” to the cosmic field recordings.
