How are the culture, rituals and architecture of entertainment intertwined with some of the great passions of our society such as sexuality, war and religion? Can an amusement park answer this question?
The Freestanding Joys are devices that open up these and many other questions. They are medium/large installations within which the artist Pauline Curnier Jardin projects her films, spaces of passions within the closed world of the museum, stories that become objects and objects that become places.
When installed together, the Freestanding Joys draw a landscape reminiscent of a funfair, but in this panorama, we can also see other references, ranging from cake design to war paraphernalia.
Starting from the concept and experience of the Freestanding Joys, the course will explore the theme of the heterotopias (Foucault, 1967) of spectacle and entertainment: together the participants will investigate the relationship to certain collective passions of our society and its total institutions, and they will ask how to transform the device of illusion into a critical tool to address the challenges of the contemporary.
