Krill / body snatch: Ute Wassermann

My voice is a hybrid, a chimera, a cyborg. I explore its furthest reaches, singing with bird whistles and field recordings, allowing it to resonate through raw materials and everyday objects. Rather than treating the human voice as an isolated entity, I understand it as part of a complex web of relationships with the many voices that inhabit my body and with the more-than-human voices that emerge from objects, materials, and environments.

Krill (20 min), for voice, objects, and field recordings, transforms an illuminated aquarium into an imaginary underwater acoustic habitat, a sounding object, and a laboratory. Using hydrophones, natural sounds are rendered as a disembodied, metallic, technological soundscape. Ute Wassermann interacts with these more-than-human voices while simultaneously becoming part of the sonic environment, raising the question: does her voice remain human?

body snatch (25 min), for voice and objects, sees Wassermann’s voice merge with bird whistles and resonant objects, constantly shifting its timbre like a chameleon. It subverts conventional gender norms and unfolds through multiple vocal identities that overlap, complement, contradict, and proliferate, revealing the voice as something fluid, relational, and continuously transforming.
