Interspecifics is a collective dedicated to observing and transforming physical phenomena, bringing together artistic and scientific disciplines to create a living, hybrid practice. Their work combines DIY methods with custom-built hardware systems, which they describe as “ontological machines”.
Exploring the vibrational connections between species, the collective uses sound frequencies to link worlds that usually remain invisible—from bacteria and slime mould to plants and measurable planetary data. These relationships are translated into environmental soundscapes through a language of communication patterns that Interspecifics refers to as “Non-human Rhythms”.
Founded in Mexico City in 2013, Interspecifics is an independent international artistic research laboratory. Their research focuses on the use of sound and artificial intelligence to investigate patterns emerging from biosignals and the morphology of living organisms, exploring their potential as forms of non-human communication. Their practice is deeply informed by the Latin American context, where precarity becomes a catalyst for creative action and ancestral technologies intersect with experimental, forward-looking modes of production.
