The selection of the pieces was in charge of the committee of the 2022 edition of the Aquisições project, composed by the curators Andreia Magalhães, Margarida Mendes and Melissa Rodrigues, who evaluated not only proposals directly submitted by artists and collectives of the city, but also works in context of the city's commercial galleries, during the past year. This exhibition will present works by Alexandra Rafael, Ani Schulze, Ana Vidigal, Carla Cruz and Cláudia Lopes, Clarice Cunha, Dinis Santos, Estefanía Landesmann, Francisco Venâncio, Hilda de Paulo, Inês Leal, Inês d'Orey, Inês Tartaruga Água, Isabel Carvalho, Jiôn Kiim, Joana Patrão, Joana Pimentel, José Loureiro, Laetitia Morais, Maria Oliveira, Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela, Marlon de Azambuja, Mónica Baptista, Odair Monteiro, Pedro Proença, Pilar Mackenna, Rebecca Moradalizadeh, Rita Magalhães, Silêncio Coletivo, Tomás Abreu, Valter Ventura e Vera Matias.

Opening — Derivas e Criaturas
Public art collections never mattered as much as they do today.
They are incredible time capsules.
They retain the memory of the past and protect the memory of the future, assuring that the art that matters today is preserved, remembered and documented for tomorrow.
Crucial for the writing of history, they set important standards for the making of collections. Differently from private collections, public collections are free to define their own criteria and follow an agenda that matters for civic life, guided by values such as quality, honesty and diversity.
Last year’s Aquisições comity was composed of three curators active in and around Porto: Andreia Magalhães, Margarida Mendes and Melissa Rodrigues. Their visions, tastes, intuitions and agendas were materialised around the incredible selection of works that incorporated the Municipal Collection this year, making it more diverse, inclusive and updated, but also rooted, intermedial and extremely gracious. All these gestures should be celebrated. This is why we are dedicating, for the first time in the Aquisições project, an exhibition to the new works that, like a group of new family members that are about to join a large kinship, will from now onwards integrate the Municipal Art Collection of our city.

Variações para Piões nº1, by Inês Tartaruga Água
Variações para Piões [Variations for spinning tops] is a set of exercises that have the launching of spinning tops as a starting point. In Variação n.º 1 [Variation No. 1], Inês Tartaruga Água explores the sound of ceramic spinning tops, whose varied forms result in resonances of distinct timbres and heights due to the continuous rotation of the objects. The body, matter and movement come into play, using the spinning top as an instrument that occupies and distributes itself in space through random trajectories, creating a spatialized sound dimension and unique compositions at each act, where silence and attentive listening sublimate moments of tension, hypnosis and meditation.
