Maria Ventura: Girls on Rails

Girls on Rails, is a video loop built from images generated by artificial intelligence, created in the early years of the technology’s growth. The work features recurring imagery of young women photographed on railway lines, somewhere between desire, nostalgia and vulnerability, thus questioning visual codes connected to risk and the romanticisation of the female figure. As the sequence unfolds, the narrative shifts from one of implicit danger to that of an autonomous and affirmative female presence. Based in Lisbon, Ventura works with video, installation, performance and drawing to explore themes of identity, memory and the symbolic codes of day-to-day life by using irony and vulnerability.
