Space Fictions – Booklets on Architecture and Cinema is a bilingual publishing project that explores the relationships between architecture and cinema. It takes the form of a collection of critical essays based on a selection of specific films, drawn from the design experiences accumulated through the practical exercise ‘Space Fictions’, within the ‘Cities and Cinema’ module of the Integrated Master’s in Architecture at the University of Minho. In each of these projects, the use of space as a narrative device in fictional cinema is translated into an architectural design. The organisation and interweaving of the essays with drawings drawn from the films thus seeks to superimpose the inherent spatial concepts and possibilities of cinema onto the synthetic realm of representation and design in architectural practice.

Francisco Ferreira (1968) is an architect and lecturer at the School of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Minho, where he teaches design modules and the module ‘Cities and Cinema’. He is a researcher at Lab2PT. His research has focused on the relationship between architecture and cinema. He has directed three short films: Panorama (2013), Anywhere (2014) and Are You Now, or Have you Ever Been? (2020). He is co-editor of the journal JACK – Journal on Architecture and Cinema* and editor of the series Space Fictions – Booklets on Architecture and Cinema.
