Maíra Mafra is the selected artist for the CCCOD residency

Maíra Mafra is the winning artist of the Open Call launched by Galeria Municipal do Porto for an artist's residency at the Centre de Création Contemporaine Olivier Debré (CCCOD). Starting on 1 May 2024, Maíra Mafra will carry out a two-month research residency at this partner centre located in Tours, France.

In the artist's words: "In the practices of inhabiting, humans and other forms of life, we all obtain the raw material for our subsistence from the environment. There is no separation between organism and environment, says Tim Ingold. How can we relate to other species, despite a division (hierarchical and even hostile) sustained by modern science? These reflections mobilise research into the relationship between living beings and their habitats in the urban environment. This is the result of modern industrialisation, urbanism and hygiene, which have defined forms of control over species: from the minimum housing unit to pest control. To elaborate on these questions, I'll use observation, speculation and fabrication about human and non-human building systems in the city of Tours".

Maíra Mafra (Rio de Janeiro, 1991) is a Portuguese-Brazilian artist currently living in Porto. With a degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Maíra is currently studying for a Masters in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. She works with the alteration of scales and impenetrability to create fabulative experiences about ideas of body, house and city, in dialogue with human and non-human practices of inhabiting.
