Midnight Zone is an exhibition by Maria Constanza Ferreira that explores the material and immaterial culture of her ancestral village, Repolão, in Portugal. In a multidisciplinary project launched in 2022, through sculptural objects and video installations, she combines material experimentation, archival research and personal history, bringing together elements linked to devotion, spirituality, death and domesticity, present in spiritual and religious rituals. Inspired by the deep ocean — a realm that evokes the unknown, loss and the search for light — the artist explores a space of suspension between presence and absence, where traditions and folk practices emerge like small flashes of bioluminescence suggesting contact with other realities. The exhibition will be on display in two of the ‘enxovias’ at the Portuguese Centre of Photography, from 8 November 2025 to 8 March 2026, and will be accompanied by a programme of public events and the launch of an artist’s book.

Maria Constanza Ferreira Cuahonte (1994, Caracas) is a Venezuelan-Portuguese-American artist based in Porto. Her practice combines experimental film, photography, installation and other formats, through which she explores images, objects and narratives that usually remain invisible. She explores art as a means of studying practices and memories, testing the boundaries between science and the occult, and reflecting on the way we relate to cultural and material landscapes. Her work proposes new forms of perception, drawing upon subtle layers of sensory, historical and symbolic experience.
